Painting by Numbers and Letters
As my interest in the game of chess has expanded in the last few years, I have become more and more interested in the visual language that is employed, especially in online chess. There are often lines drawn by streaming chess players (and while you’re playing) to indicate where you are meaning to play. To explore this further, I began painting the moves of the pieces for my own games and famous games. I also stream games live while playing/painting using watercolors. The results are quite messy, just like the games can often get messy. There’s an element of time, time that you have to make a move, time remaining in the game, the moves that you can’t get back, the moves that you missed, the moves that you’re planning. They’re all seen in each stroke of the paintbrush. Chess is a beautiful game.
