Website SEO and Content Optimization

Case Study:

BackBayStaffingGroup.com was a functional site, but the design was becoming dated and the backend of the site was very difficult to use. The owner agreed it was time for an update.

The first thing I did was choose a color scheme to support the mission of the business. The staffing industry relies on trust and blue is a very strong color to convey that message. I revamped the company logo to reflect that choice.

The former version of the site.

I then migrated the site from a very old version of Wordpress to Squarespace. This was so the owners would have no issues editing content themselves which was a major drawback to using Wordpress for them. I also redesigned the homepage and did a full site SEO optimization, adding keyword-centric webpages to ensure good internal-linking between pages. The site was also optimized to the industry specific keywords that would optimize the number of visitors searching for staffing assistance in Boston.

While basically static and not updated frequently, the website still receives over 10k visits per year with the help of these optimizations.

Brand Building and E-Commerce

In the summer of 2024, I started an e-commerce store called Chordchic.com with the purpose of freshening up my branding and website building skills. I also wanted to get back into a habit of practicing graphic design on the daily.

The first logo

I began with the alliteration of the Chord and Chic and liking that it was unique. I knew that my target audience would understand the reference to music, as I was building a very specific niche brand. The first logo was pink and black for contrast, featuring a music note to replace the O in chord.

However, as I started testing ads and selling to customers, I decided to re-brand a little to present a slightly more masculine design to cater to the audience that was purchasing the shirts which were mostly men on my Shopify store.

The second logo used red, white and black, with high contrast and a lot of energy. The “chic” is minimized and the word “Chord” becomes the center point. The music notes in the center form a musical chord and present an interesting geometric shape. The typography is bold and sans serif makes the brand feel new and modern.

Chord Chic targets musicians and many of my designs play with instruments and musical notation. As of writing this, the shop is still new and growing, especially on Etsy.

Logo Design + Branding

Branding is the personality that the company experiences with a company and is a very important part of marketing. Small or large companies should be aware of their branding to be consistent to their customers. Branding includes typography, colors, logo placement, tone and messaging guidelines that are unique to each company based on their culture, target demographic and product. You have to know how to position yourself. Here’s a sample branding example for a fictional company called Peak Plunge Entertainment.

Sample Company - Peak Plunge Entertainment

A case-study company that opens amusement parks on mountains and large hills.

Logo Design

Clean and elegant with a mountain surrounded in roller coaster tracks. The Sailors font here is vintage, fun, sans serif to create a playful but ultimately readable font. It is slightly at an angle to invoke that moment at the top of a roller coaster where the front cars have started down and the rear cars are still going to the peak of the hill. The red and blue colors contrast well and represent a fun place for families to enjoy.

Sample Social Media Ads

“You Don’t Come Here To Feel Safe” is playing with the initial feelings people would likely experience seeing a roller coaster on a hill. Calling it out and enticing thrill seekers to come to the park and experience the main attraction.

Logo Design:

I approach every logo the same way, by asking “what is the message that is needed?” Once that question is answered it is often easy to generate five or six different approaches and work with clients to figure out what direction they are interested in going in.

Additional technical considerations are given to making sure that the font is readable at any scale, that there is a plan for horizontal logos when they inevitably end up displayed in vertical spaces (like social media profiles) etc.

Here are some real company examples:
